Welcome to my website! I post a note here every Sunday night about life in New Mexico, including gardening travails and writing news. Drop me a line with any suggestions, complaints, or poetry commissions—payment required in advance; homemade jam accepted in lieu of cash.
What's New - August 31, 2008:
Brace yourselves, campers: I plan to do everything in my power to gross you out. First, here's what the worm bin looked like last Monday, when I gave the sweethearts a fresh batch of kitchen scraps and newspaper, and here's what it looked like today. Can you believe the compost they accomplished in only six days? The grotesque has never been more sublime. Second entry in the gross-out-fest: here's a report about how plastic collects in the ocean from a site called "Best Life: The magazine covering what matters to men." Bet you never thought I'd link you to a men's magazine. But we only read it for the articles, right, campers? The third gross thing is that we biked into town for a matinee of Tropic Thunder. Yuck. I never thought I'd hear myself say this, but Matthew McConaughey was the best part of the movie.
Finally, and most stomach-turning, The Grumpy Old Man has chosen Good Sister Psycho as his running mate. Beyond her education (bachelor's degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho), and her experience (moose hunting), it's really only how she hates polar bears that makes me question the wisdom of even suggesting we put her anywhere in line for the Oval Office. And I'm not alone; Fox News itself questions the same thing, sort of. I know, I know, we've gone too far; this is too disgusting. But what really gets me is that her presence on the ticket actually seems to have improved the GOP's chances in November, at least for the moment. Sometimes I wonder what insanity it is that stalks these states.
And now, to thank you for your patience wading with me through all this poop soup, here is a reminder that Frijoles Canyon is still there and still beautiful. Spencer turned 40 yesterday, and we celebrated by hiking Bandelier's Falls Trail. Highly recommended as a way to welcome a new decade—a nearly nonexistent gross factor, if you can overlook just how badly you need a shower when you're done.
